Sun Siyam Care
Together, we care. Together, we create impact.
Sun Siyam Resorts is committed to responsible and sustainable business operations in the Maldives and Sri Lanka through the Sun Siyam Care program. Our approach focuses on business sustainability, resource efficiency, waste and plastic reduction, renewable energy, protection of biodiversity, animal welfare, women empowerment, community development, and cultural preservation. Guided by our Sustainable Management Plan as our roadmap, we minimize environmental impacts while creating long-term socio-economic value for our communities, people, and guests.
Sustainability Commitment with Global Recognition
Under the Sun Siyam Care sustainability program, Sun Siyam Resorts continues to strengthen its commitment to responsible tourism through alignment with internationally recognized certification frameworks. Five Sun Siyam Resorts in the Maldives hold Green Globe membership and are actively working towards achieving certification. In Sri Lanka, Sun Siyam Pasikudah has achieved Travelife Gold Certification, marking a significant milestone in the group’s sustainability journey and providing travelers with confidence in our responsible practices.

Travelife is a leading non-profit sustainability program for the tourism and hospitality sector, supporting destinations and businesses in continuously improving their sustainability performance. Achieving Travelife Gold Certification requires compliance with 147 rigorous sustainability criteria, covering areas such as energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, employee welfare, social responsibility, biodiversity protection, and active support for local communities and local businesses.
Green Globe is an internationally recognized sustainability certification for the travel and tourism industry, based on globally accepted standards for sustainable management, social and economic responsibility, cultural heritage protection, and environmental conservation. By working towards Green Globe certification, Sun Siyam Resorts in the Maldives is reinforcing its long-term commitment to continuous improvement, transparent sustainability reporting, and alignment with global best practices.
Sustainable Management
Sun Siyam Resorts operates under a structured Sustainability Management System (SMS) that integrates environmental responsibility, socio-cultural care, quality, health, safety, and legal compliance across all resorts. We strengthen implementation through continuous employee training, transparent communication, and regular guest satisfaction monitoring. Sustainable design and construction respect local culture, heritage, and natural surroundings, while interpretative experiences enhance guest awareness. Supported by strong health, safety, and disaster preparedness measures, our approach ensures responsible operations, stakeholder wellbeing, and long-term sustainability.
Socio-Economic Contribution & Community Engagement
Siyam Resorts is committed to creating positive socio-economic impact within the communities where we operate. Through apprenticeship and training programmes, we empower Maldivian youth with skills and career opportunities in tourism. We prioritize local hiring and local purchasing to strengthen the local economy and enhance community wellbeing.

Through Sun Siyam Care, we actively support education, healthcare, and community development initiatives, working closely with local stakeholders. We promote gender equality by partnering with women’s development committees for services such as food preparation, cleaning, and gardening, providing sustainable income opportunities for local women. These initiatives reflect our commitment to responsible tourism, inclusive growth, and shared value creation.
Preservation of Local Heritage
As a 100% Maldivian-owned company and The Home of Maldivian Spirit, Sun Siyam Resorts is committed to preserving and celebrating cultural heritage across all its destinations. Through Sun Siyam Care, guests are invited to experience local traditions through storytelling, cultural performances, festivals, and guided island visits. At Sun Siyam Pasikudah, Sri Lanka, the resort actively respects, protects, and promotes local heritage by honoring community traditions, cultural values, and ways of life. These experiences foster cultural appreciation while supporting local communities and safeguarding authentic island identities.
Environmental
Biodiversity Conservation
Sun Siyam Resorts supports biodiversity conservation through Sun Siyam Care by protecting marine and terrestrial ecosystems, coral reefs, and wildlife in collaboration with local authorities. Each resort has a dedicated marine biologist leading coral reef restoration and guest-led activities such as coral planting and tree planting. In Sri Lanka, the CarePhant project supports elephant welfare in partnership with the Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Elephant Transit Home, reinforcing our commitment to animal welfare and ecosystem protection.

Paper, Plastic & Waste Reduction
Sun Siyam Resorts actively reduces paper, plastic, and food waste through multiple initiatives. Our PLEDGE on Food Prevention Program minimizes food loss, while single-use plastics are eliminated, and in-house water bottling and strict waste segregation practices are implemented. In partnership with CLEAN Maldives and the World Bank, Siyam World hosts the nation’s first Plastic Upcycling Center, and composting converts organic waste into fertilizer. Supported by Sun Siyam Care, guest awareness campaigns, sustainable packaging, and resource-efficient technologies further reduce environmental impact.

Renewable energy – Solar energy project
The Maldives and Sri Lanka have abundant sunshine, making it well-suited for solar energy generation. Sun Siyam Resorts has rolled out one of the largest solar energy initiatives in the Maldives hospitality sector. These reductions directly support the Maldives’ target of 33 percent renewable energy penetration by 2028 and its long-term Net Zero 2030 ambition. The project supports the transition from diesel-based systems to renewable energy, generating close to six million kilowatt hours of Renewable energy annually. By investing in solar power and training local engineering teams, we are reducing our carbon footprint while strengthening long term sustainability across our resorts.

Our guests can support our projects and sustainable activities led by Sun Siyam Care with a 10$ per villa, per stay contribution.
